Smith]] had a daughter, [[Dorothy%20Blanche%20Smith|Dorothy Blanche Smith]], in "West Harrietstown" in 1887. Blanche also went on to make a career as a nurse. Mary Ellen's first husband Charles died sometime afterward, and she remarried [[Jack%20Carrier|John "Jack" Carrier]] in 1899. They had a son, [[John%20Carrier|John Dean Carrier]].
