In an article in the ''[[Adirondack%20Daily%20Enterprise|Adirondack Daily Enterprise]]'' on [[William%20Haase|William Haase]], village historian [[John%20J.%20Duquette|John J. Duquette]] wrote:

In 1903 Haase apparently contracted tuberculosis and came to Saranac Lake for his health. At first he stayed at the [[Riverside%20Inn|Riverside Inn]] and later rented the '''McCarthy house between Shepard Avenue and Church Street'''. Here, with his wife, he stayed for more than two years, during which time his condition improved to the point that, like so many others, he decided to remain in the area. In May of 1907 he purchased the [[Pinehurst|Ehrich camp]] on [[Lower%20Saranac%20Lake|Lower Saranac]] where [[Robert%20L.%20Stevenson|Robert L. Stevenson]] had been a frequent guest 20 years earlier.

This appears to be that house, much changed by time. The Ehrich camp became [[Pinehurst|Pinehurst]].

Today this house is located in the middle of the block, accessed by the driveway of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, but formerly it fronted on McCarthy Terrace, a short street with only two houses that once came in from Shepard Avenue on the other side of the block.
