Consolidated Motor Bus Lines

Malone Farmer, February 17, 1926

The Consolidated Bus Lines, Inc., of Tupper Lake, which recently purchased the De Laire Motor Bus Co.'s line between that village and the Federal Hospital, has also purchased the bi-daily bus line between Tupper Lake and Saranac Lake and has applied to the Public Service commission for a transfer of the franchise. A new 25- passenger bus will be placed on this line to be opened as early as possible in the spring and a year round schedule will be maintained, the company co-operating with town officials in keeping the road open in winter. The members of the company are Dr. Facteau, Earl Snyder and George Fitzsimonds. "Sunmount" is the name of a new postoffice opened yesterday at the Federal Hospital, on account of the large volume of mail received and dispatched from that institution. Heretofore the mail has been distributed through the Tupper Lake post- office and carried to the institution in a hospital truck. William L. Bouchard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Bouchard, of Tupper Lake, is the first postmaster of Sunmount. His assistant is Lionel De Laire, who has been employed for more than a year at the hospital in handling the mail.

This photograph is from a card advertising the Consolidated Motor Bus Lines, Inc., which operated a passenger service between Tupper and Saranac Lake, about 1930.

The firm's "22-passenger observation parlor car bus", with luggage rack atop, takes up the front of the card and the Consolidated Lines bus schedule, "effective winter and summer", occupies the back.

The bus made two round trips between Tupper and Saranac Lake daily, in addition to a Sunday-only run, and the trip took an hour and 25 minutes, about three times as long as today's motorists average. Seven stops made along the route, plus seven or eight extra miles via the old route accounted for the lengthy run. Buses left Tupper at 6:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., weekdays, and 12:30 p.m. on Sundays, and stopped at Sunmount, Wawbeek, Saranac Inn Hotel, Saranac Inn Station, Otisville, Lake Clear Junction and Peck's Corners, arriving in Saranac Lake at 7:55 a.m. and 1:55 p.m. The through fare was a modest $1.00, and the line made connections at Saranac Lake with buses for Malone. Lake Placid and Plattsburgh, and at Tupper Lake with a bus for Long Lake.
