SARANAC LAKE - Edith M. Safford, 96, of [[60%20Church%20Street|60 Church Street]], Saranac Lake, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at the [[Adirondack%20Medical%20Center|Adirondack Medical Center]] in Saranac Lake. 

Born on Feb. 21, 1909 in South Wales, United Kingdom, she was the daughter of Albert and Elizabeth Jane (Davis) Hawkins 

Mrs. Safford moved from Wales to Montreal when she was 16. She moved to this area and worked as head chef at Buster Crabb's [[Meenahga%20Lodge|Meenahga Lodge]] Boys Camp at Clear Pond in [[Onchiota|Onchiota]] until 1974. She then worked in the housekeeping department at the Lake Placid Club until 1993. 

Edith was an avid bowler for more than 40 years, and she competed in various leagues, including the Old as You Feel League. She also loved to read, do crossword puzzles and travel. 

Edith is survived by one son, John Safford and his wife Suzy of Whippleville; three granddaughters Lisa Latham  and her husband Mike of Somerset, Ky., Julie Murphy and her husband Ron of Ballston Spa and Jill McClain and her husband Bob of Clifton Park; six great-grandchildren Rachel, Emily, Sarah, Adam, Molly and John; one brother, Ben Hawkins and his wife Peg of York, England; and several nieces and nephews 

She was predeceased by her husband, [[Herbert%20E.%20Safford|Herbert E. Safford]], on Feb. 20, 1974, and eight brothers and sisters. 

Calling hours will take place from 6 to 7 pm today at the [[Fortune-Keough%20Funeral%20Home|Fortune-Keough Funeral Home]] in Saranac Lake. A funeral service will follow at 7 p. m. at the funeral home with the Rev. [[Robert%20Lawthers|Robert Lawthers]] of [[St.%20Luke%27s%20Church|St. Luke's Church]], Officiating. Bunal will be in Morningside Cemetery in Malone. 

Friends wishing to remember Edith may make memorial contributions to the [[Saranac%20Lake%20Volunteer%20Fire%20Department|Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department]] and Rescue Squad in care of the funeral Home.
