'''Ferdinand Walker Chase''', known as Ferd, built the [[Loon%20Lake%20House|Loon Lake House]] in 1879, operating it until his death in 1916. 

He was born in Wheelock Hollow, Vermont, in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.  After serving in the American Civil War, he worked as an expressman on the Central Vermont Railroad for several years, and then as a hotel clerk at Central House in Essex Junction, Vermont.  He married [[Mary%20Chase|Mary Chase]] in 1874, and the two managed Central House for the next four years. 

They became interested in the Adirondacks, vacationing in the Loon Lake region several times.  In 1878, they bought ten acres on a high knoll overlooking the lake, and started building their first home while staying in an old log tavern, which they later bought, on the [[Port%20Kent%20and%20Hopkinton%20Turnpike|Port Kent and Hopkinton Turnpike]].

''2012-06-26 16:57:19''   Very interesting.  I work for an attorney in Kansas City, Missouri.  While researching his great great grandfather, Harley P. Mathewson, I came across a letter that Ferd W. Chase sent to the Commissioner of the U.S. Pensioners(sp) in Washington DC.  He was apparently trying to reach Harley P. Mathewson.  The document is in the Genealogy Center - Our Military Heritage.  Just thought that someone might be interested.  The request was dated January 20, 1915.  I found this site because the request was written on Loon Lake House letterhead.
