SARANAC LAKE — Fletcher Mace, 97, Saranac Lake's last [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish-American_War|Spanish-American War]] veteran, died Thursday evening at the Glens Falls Hospital. He had lived at [[40%20Helen%20Street|40 Helen St.]] for many years and, for the last three years, was a resident of Eden Park Nursing Home in Glens Falls.

Mr. Mace was born in Clintonville, a son of Amasa and Elizabeth Mace. He came to Saranac Lake with his family when he was 13 years old and attended [[Saranac%20Lake%20High%20School|Saranac Lake High School]]. He won prizes for figure skating and the mile race in the first [[Winter%20Carnival|Winter Carnival]].

He enlisted in the regular Army in 1898 during the Spanish-American War and fought in Cuba under General Shatter. When the war was over he served in the Philippines until 1901.

In 1909 he was married at [[St.%20Luke%27s%20Church|St. Luke's Church]] to Gladys Brown who is now deceased.

For many years he was custodian of the [[Camp%20To-No-Na|William Hanes Camp]] on [[Lower%20Saranac%20Lake|Lower Saranac Lake]] and he was employed as a buyer by the [[Saranac%20Lake%20Supply|Saranac Lake Supply]] for 30 years.

Mr. Mace was a member of [[St.%20Luke%27s%20Church|St. Luke's Church]]; [[Masonic%20Temple|Whiteface Mt. Lodge 789]], F and AM; the Adirondack Commandery; Oriental Temple of the Shrine; [[Eastern%20Star|Order of the Eastern Star]]; Order of Amaranth; the Adirondack Shrine Club; the [[Odd%20Fellows|Oddfellow]]; [[Veterans%20of%20Foreign%20wars|Veterans of Foreign wars]]; and the [[Fish%20and%20Game%20Club|Fish and Game Club]].

A son, Dermot, of Crown Point, two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter survive.

Friends may call, beginning at 7 p.m., Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the [[Fortune%20Funeral%20Home|Fortune Funeral Home]]. There will be a Masonic service at 8 p.m. Sunday. The funeral will be at the funeral home at 11 am., Monday with the Rev. [[Peter%20O.%20Hill|Peter Hill]], rector of St Luke's Church, officiating. Interment will follow in [[Pine%20Ridge%20Cemetery|Pine Ridge Cemetery]].
