Lovell Newell''' was a [[https://localwiki.org/hsl/World_War_II_veteran|World War II veteran]].  He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. [[Harold%20Newell|Harold Newell]] of [[Paul%20Smiths|Paul Smiths]].  An American Legion grave marker in [[St.%20John's%20Cemetery%20in%20Paul%20Smiths|St. John's Cemetery in Paul Smiths]] reads "Staff Sgt. Killed over Germany. Buried in Belgium. Members of 8th Air Force."  His sister Lenore's obituary (''Adirondack Daily Enterprise'', December 30, 2020) noted that on a European trip, she was able to lay a memorial on the grave of Harold Lovel Newell in the Ardennes American Cemetery in Neupre, Belgium. His twin brother, [[Loren%20C.%20Newell|Loren]], was also killed in the war.

Two more air corps casualties were reported in Saranac Lake last Wednesday, one a second twin son missing in action and the other a marine corps captain killed in action in the South Pacific,

This brought the total to four in three days, or more than were reported from the village for the entire world war I.

The latest casualties are Capt. [[William%20B.%20Reardon|William B. Reardon]] of the marine corps, killed in action in the South Pacific and Sgt. Lovell Newell, missing in action over Germany.

Sgt. Newell is the second twin son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Newell at Paul Smiths. He was reported missing over Germany since April 18. His twin, Sgt. Loren C. Newell, was reported missing on Dec. 20.

Sgt. Lovell Newell was wounded several months ago but recovered and soon returned to action. He was a gunner on a bomber and enlisted in the air force in September, 1942.

He served at various bases and was stationed at Camp Butner, N. C., before going overseas. He was graduated from an aerial gunnery school at Laredo, Tex., shortly before ordered overseas. While in action he was a turret gunner on a B-24 Liberator bomber.

His brother, Sgt. [[Loren%20Newell|Loren Newell]], was a radio man on a Liberator bomber and had been overseas only a month when reported missing.

The family has two other sons, Richard and Donald of [[Paul%20Smiths|Paul Smiths]] and one daughter, Mrs. William Leavitt of [[Gabriels|Gabriels]]...

Staff Sgt. H. Lowell Newell, one of twin brothers reported missing died in action April 18, according to information received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Newell of Paul Smiths.

The telegram follows: "Reports received from the German government thru the International Red Cross states that your son Staff Sgt. H. Lovell Newell was killed in action on April 18th in European area."

Sgt. Newell's brother, Sgt. [[Loren%20Newell|Loren Newell]], is still reported missing in action following a raid over Germany on Dec. 20. No word has been received since the first telegram that declared him missing.

Sgt. Lowell Newell was a top turret gunner on a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolidated_B-24_Liberator|B-24 bomber]]. He had been in action for many months prior to the raid in which he lost his life. His twin was a radioman on a Liberator bomber.
