He graduated from the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SUNY-ESF_Ranger_School|Ranger School at Wannakena]] in 1948, and worked for the state [[Department%20of%20Environmental%20Conservation|Department of Environmental Conservation]] and the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1948 to 1953. He was later employed as a corrections officer at Dannemora Correctional Facility, retiring after 22 years of service in 1979.
