SARANAC LAKE - Hugh McLaughlin IV, 88, of [[English%20Cottage|97 Margaret Street]], Saranac Lake, died Monday, Sept, 20, 2004 at the [[Adirondack%20Medical%20Center|Adirondack Medical Center]] in Saranac Lake. 

Born on March 23, 1916 in Saranac Lake, he was the son of [[Hugh%20McLaughlin%20III|Hugh]] and [[Hazel%20English|Hazel (English) McLaughlin]]. He was the great-grandson of Hugh "Boss" McLaughlin, a well-known Brooklyn politician. 

McLaughlin attended Tri-State College in Angola, Ind. in 1936 where he studied mechanical engineering. He went on to work in a war plant in Rochester. While in the service, he spent time in Alabama, California, Florida, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin. 

In the summer of 1945 on the Island of Tinian, as a member of the 505th Bomb Group in the 10th Air Force Division, his job was to maintain radar equipment on the bombers. 

On Aug. 6, 1945, three days after the bombing of Hiroshima, he was one of the few who eye-witnessed the second bomb, known as "Fat Man" as it was being hoisted onto a war plane. 

In his youth, he enjoyed riding an old Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and years later became an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed spending time with his family and-friends at their camps on [[East%20Pine%20Pond|East Pine Pond]] and [[Long%20Pond|Long Pond]]. 

A native of Saranac Lake, McLaughlin worked for General Motors in Rochester before his service during the war. Following his discharge, he returned to Saranac Lake to help his grandfather run the [[St.%20Regis%20Hotel|St. Regis Hotel]]. He later worked for [[Latour%20Fuel%20Company|Latour Fuel Company]], Metropolitan Fuel and Pittston Petroleum, beginning as a fuel truck driver and then as an oil burner repairman. 

He retired in 1982. 

McLaughlin was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. 

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, whom he married March 4, 1946 in Saranac Lake; two daughters: Genevieve McLaughlin of Hannawa Falls and [[Karen%20McLaughlin|Karen McLaughlin]] of Saranac Lake; two sisters-in-law: [[Peggy%20McLaughlin|Peggy McLaughlin]] of Saranac Lake and Barbara Kondilis and her son Nick Kondilis of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two nephews: [[Bill%20McLaughlin%2C%20Jr.|Bill McLaughlin, Jr.]] and his wife Lorraine of Saranac Lake and [[Richard%20Jewtraw|Richard Jewtraw]]; a niece, Shannon McLaughlin Stratton of Saranac Lake; two great-nephews: Devon Stratton of Saranac Lake and Timothy McLaughlin of Albany; and one great-niece, Kerry McLaughlin-Trembly of St Albans, Vt. 

He was predeceased by his parents; his brother, [[Bill%20McLaughlin|Bill McLaughlin]], who was well-known for his ''[[Adirondack%20Daily%20Enterprise|Adirondack Daily Enterprise]]'' "Merely Local" columns; a sister-in-law, [[Ethel%20Jewtraw|Ethel Jewtraw]] and her husband Richard; and a brother-in-law, [[Francis%20Kondilis|Francis Kondilis]]. 

Calling hours will take place from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm. Friday, Sept. 24 at the [[Fortune-Keough%20Funeral%20Home|Fortune-Keough Funeral Home]] in Saranac Lake. A veteran's service will be held at 7:30 pm. and a Bible vigil service will take place at 8:45 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept 25 at [[St.%20Bernard%27s%20Church|St. Bernard's Church]] in Saranac Lake. Burial will take place in Old St Bernard's Cemetery at [[Pine%20Ridge%20Cemetery|Pine Ridge Cemetery]]. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the [[Saranac%20Lake%20Adult%20Center|Saranac Lake Adult Center]] or the Knights of Columbus in care of the Fortune- Keough Funeral Home.
