'''Well Known Guide Dies at Saranac''' 

James M. Quirk, a native of Au Sable Forks, and one of the best known guides in the Adirondacks, died in the [[Saranac%20Lake%20General%20hospital|Saranac Lake General hospital]] last Thursday shortly before midnight, and his funeral was held from [[St.%20Bernard%27s%20church|St. Bernard's church]] in that village on Monday. Mr. Quirk had been in failing health for about three months prior to his death, and a few days before the end came he was removed from his home in Saranac Lake to the General hospital for an operation which the attending physician advised as a last hope for prolonging his life. Mr. Quirk had for forty years been employed as a guide by the [[Saranac%20Club|Saranac Club]] corporation at [[Bartlett%27s%20Carry|Bartlett's Carry]], between the [[Middle%20Saranac%20Lake|middle]] and [[upper%20Saranac%20Lake|upper Saranac Lake]]s, and in that capacity had guided many notables of the state and nation who summered in the Adirondacks. Mr. Quirk was born at Au Sable Forks in 1855, and started working at Bartlett's Carry when he was 17 years of age. He is survived by his wife who he married at Union Falls about 45 years ago, two sons, Leo and James M., jr., two brothers, Michael of Au Sable Forks and Thomas of Fargo, N. D., and three sisters, Miss Catherine of Au Sable Forks, Mrs. M. Hennessy of Syracuse and Mrs. Henry Pine of Ausable Chasm.
