SARANAC LAKE - John "Abe" J. Labas, 83, formerly of Riverside Drive, Saranac Lake, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999 at Mercy Health Care Center in Tupper Lake where he had been resident since 1996.

Born Feb. 4, 1916 in Granville, he was the son of John and Anna (Plaveci) Labas.

Mr. Labas married Marjorie (Mooney) Buckley in 1967 at St. Bernard's Church. He was a graduate of Granville High School and later attended St. Bonaventure University. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the United States Army in Company A of the 114th Infantry. He received a Purple Heart, EAME Ribbon and three [[bronze%20star|bronze star]]s for his service.

Following the war he moved to Saranac Lake in 1948 and bought part interest in the [[Top%20Hat%20Restaurant|Top Hat Restaurant]], which he operated for several years. He later worked at the Lake Placid Club Resort Golf Shop as Caddymaster and starter for many years until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the Saranac Lake V.F.W.

Survivors include two stepsons, Michael Buckley of Rochester and Timothy Buckley of Fairbanks, Alaska; one stepdaughter, Patricia Buckley of Albany; one brother, George Labas of Granville; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife in 1988; three brothers, Andy, Michael and Alex; and one sister Mary Billow.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the [[Fortune-Keough%20Funeral%20Home|Fortune-Keough Funeral Home]] in Saranac Lake.

Calling hours will take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the King Funeral Home in Granville. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Peter and Paul Church in Granville, with the Rev. Hal Stockert officiating. Burial will be in the [[St.%20Bernard%20Cemetery|St. Bernard Cemetery]] in Saranac Lake in May.

Memorial contributions may be made to the [[Saranac%20Lake%20Adult%20Center|Saranac Lake Adult Center]] or [[St.%20Bernard's%20Church|St. Bernard's Church]] in care of the Fortune Keough Funeral Home.
