'''Pvt. Sarant, Saranac Lake, Dies In England.'''

Saranac Lake.—Mrs. Mary Rock, of 44 Woodruff Street, was notified by the War Department that her grandson, Pvt. Leon Sarant, 27, had died January 6 in Stockbridge, England. His father resides in Malone at present.

No explanations of how he died or the cause of his death were contained in the telegram. It merely stated that he had died in England on January 6th.

His grandmother had received no word from him since December 8, at which time he was in a hospital in the country after undergoing an appendectomy operation. His death, it is thought, may have been the outcome of this illness.

Pvt. Sarant was born in Saranac Lake on April 3, 1917, and he had spent most of his life here. He attended [[Saranac Lake High School]] and was employed in this village until entering the Army.

He enlisted in the service March 3, 1942, and received his training at Camp Hood, Texas, Los Angeles, Cal., and Camp Howes, Texas. In September he received his overseas orders and was sent to England, where he was stationed at the time of his death.

Last summer Pvt. Sarant spent his furlough in this village visiting his grandmother.

Pvt. Sarant was a cousin of Pvt. [[George L. Leggett|George L. Leggett]], who has been reported missing in Belgium. Since a telegram this week Pvt. Leggett's parents have heard no further word of him.
