<span>SARANAC LAKE -<span> <span>Mrs. Mary <span>Dell Newbold of [[Helen%20Scopes%20Turner%20Cottage|96 Park Ave.]], died <span>Friday<span> <span>evening,<span> <span>Nov. 22, at<span> <span>the <span>[[General%20Hospital%20of%20Saranac%20Lake|General Hospital of Saranac Lake]].

<span>She was born in Ventnor, N.J., the <span>daughter<span> <span>of<span> <span>Vaughn<span> <span>and<span> <span>Mary <span>Mathis.

<span>She moved to Saranac Lake in the <span>late 1940's.

<span>Mrs. Newbold and her husband, T. <span>Jefferson<span> <span>Newbold,<span> <span>owned<span> <span>and <span>operated Dairy Dell, Inc., in Saranac <span>Lake for many years. She continued <span>to operate the dairy after his death in <span>1960 and until her retirement.

<span>She<span> <span>had<span> <span>been<span> <span>a<span> <span>trustee<span> <span>and <span>treasurer<span> <span>of the [[Trudeau%20Institute|Trudeau]]<span><span>[[Trudeau%20Institute|Institute]] <span>here, and was, at the time of her <span>death, a member of the board of <span>trustees of the [[Saranac%20Lake%20Free%20Library|Saranac Lake Free]][[Saranac%20Lake%20Free%20Library| ]]<span>[[Saranac%20Lake%20Free%20Library|Library]] and member of [[Church%20of%20St.%20Luke%2C%20the%20Beloved%20Physician|St. Luke's]][[Church%20of%20St.%20Luke%2C%20the%20Beloved%20Physician| ]]<span>[[Church%20of%20St.%20Luke%2C%20the%20Beloved%20Physician|Church]].

<span>For<span> <span>many<span> <span>years,<span> <span>she had done <span>volunteer<span> <span>work<span> <span>at<span> <span>the<span> <span>General <span>Hospital.

<span>Survivors include a son, T. Jefferson Newbold; and a granddaughter, <span>Amanda Newbold.

<span>A memorial service will be held at <span>7:30 p.m. today at St. Luke's Church, <span>with the Rev. Rick Dennis, pastor, of<span>ficiating.

<span>Burial<span> <span>will<span> <span>be<span> <span>in<span> <span>North<span> <span>Elba <span>Cemetery in Lake Placid.

<span>SARANAC LAKE — The carefree days of summers <span>past are frozen in time and highlighted in a <span>photography exhibit at the [[Saranac%20Lake%20Free%20Library|Saranac Lake Free]][[Saranac%20Lake%20Free%20Library| ]]<span>[[Saranac%20Lake%20Free%20Library|Library]].

<span>"Gateways to Adirondack Summers: 1870<span>  1900," <span>the Mary-Dell Mathis Newbold Memorial Photography <span>Exhibit, opens Saturday in the Cantwell Community <span>Room of the library.

<span>The exhibit of 24 photographs is a tribute to the artistry of three outstanding Adirondack photographers: <span>[[Seneca%20Ray%20Stoddard|Seneca Ray Stoddard]], [[George%20W.%20Baldwin|G. W. Baldwin]] and [[William%20L.%20Distin|William L.]][[William%20L.%20Distin| ]]<span>[[William%20L.%20Distin|Distin]].

<span>It is also a grateful acknowledgement of the work of <span>Mary-Dell "Mandy" Newbold who spent many hours <span>cataloguing the extensive photograph collection of the <span>Saranac Lake Free Library. Exhibit costs including <span>framing, matting and printing of photographs were <span>made possible by gifts to the library in memory of Mrs. <span>Newbold.

<span>A brochure accompanying the show explains that the <span>trickle of adventurous sportsmen to the North Woods <span>before the Civil War was succeeded during the last <span>three decades of the century by a rush of health and <span>pleasure seekers. From railroad stations on the <span>borders of the Adirondack Wilderness, they traveled <span>by lake steamer and stagecoach to summer resorts <span>which offered the comforts of civilization in the roman <span>tic setting of mountain lakes and forests

<span>There the primitive lodges of the earlier generation <span>of hunters and fishermen were replaced by luxurious <span>hotels with long shady piazzas and elaborate observatory towers. Their lawns were dotted with carpeted <span>tents and gazebos, private cottages and boathouses, <span>with tennis courts, golf links and croquet grounds, with <span>windmills, gardens and livery stables. Guides were <span>engaged for fishing and hunting expeditions or for picnic excursions to scenic spots where sketching and <span>gathering water lilies occupied the summer afternoons. In the evenings after sumptuous dinners, the <span>gentlemen could repair to the billiard and smoking <span>rooms, the ladies to reading and writing rooms, then <span>together again for dancing and concerts.

<span>The Gilded Age prospered. More hotels were built, <span>more steamers plied the lakes; the railroads extended <span>their tracks to the heart of the mountains. More and <span>more, nature was embellished by artifice. Then, slowly <span>the times and places changed. Autos and improved <span>roads freed vacationers to attempt greater distances <span>and shorter stays in a succession of resorts. Hotels failed or burned. The serenity of the end of the 19th Century was lost to the calamities and restlessness of the <span>20th Century.

<span>The photographs in the exhibit were chosen as a <span>gateway to that lost idyllic time. The public is welcome <span>to view the show, at no charge, during regular library <span>hours through August 15.

<span>The exhibit will also travel to other libraries and <span>museums. The frames and mats can be used to display <span>other library photographs This flexible use of frames <span>is part of the purpose of the memorial.
