'''William M. Butterfield''' was born in New York City, the only child of B.V. and Betty Butterfield. He was a [[World%20War%20II%20Veteran|World War II Veteran]], having served in the 303rd Infantry Regiment in Europe and Asiatic Pacific Theaters, and earning a [[Bronze%20Star|Bronze Star]].

He and his wife moved to Saranac Lake with their three children in 1955 where he worked for the [[Saranac%20Lake%20Central%20Schools|Saranac Lake Central Schools]] as an English teacher and counselor.

In his youth he was an athlete, playing football, basketball, tennis and golf; in later years he coached and officiated in football and basketball.

He was remembered fondly by his students.
