The '''Silver Laundry''' was built at 36 Charles Street by William S. Silver in 1913. It was later operated by his daughter, [[Edythe S. Smith]]. It was destroyed in a spectacular fire on June 12, 1955; the Smith home nearby was saved. At the time of its destruction, it employed 16 to 18 workers during its busy season. 1

After the fire, the Troy Laundry offered the use of its facilities to Mrs. Smith. There were initially plans to rebuild, but in November 1955 it was merged with the [[Troy Laundry]]. 2 A local twelve year old boy later confessed to setting the fires. 3
