Nikander I. Strelsky
[a Grave]

Born: September 7, 1892

Died: June 20, 1946

Married: Katharine Anderson

Nikander I. Strelsky fought on the losing side of the Russian Revolution, and ended up stranded in Constantinople.  In 1922 he was appointed manager of the Russian Imperial Ballet when the corps was preparing for an international tour. In 1923, the troupe set sail for New York City for the American leg of their tour. Strelsky fell seriously ill almost immediately upon arrival. He spent from 1923 until 1929, in the Adirondack Mountains, in the medical facility at Saranac Lake. While recuperating from his illness he earned a living by doing research work for a doctor at the hospital. Also at Saranac Lake, Strelsky met his future wife, Katherine Anderson. In 1928, they married in Garrison, New York.

In the early 1930s he began giving private Russian language lessons to Vassar students, and by 1935, the college hired him as an instructor of Russian.
