Mathew Israel Gelfand was a recent graduate from medical school in Boston when he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. He came to Saranac Lake to cure in the early 1950s. His wife Sylvia lived on Church Street while he was curing. After treatment, he went on to a lifelong career as a physician. He and his wife had four children.

A brick in Mathew Gelfand's name has been dedicated by his children at the Saranac Laboratory Museum.
