Alfred Billings Street was an author and a poet.  Born in Poughkeepsie, his family moved to Monticello in Sullivan County when he was young, and he was educated at the Dutchess county academy before studying law with his father, Randall S. Street. In 1839 he moved to Albany and edited the Northern Light from 1843 to 1844. He wrote poetry that was published in literary magazines and was appointed New York State Librarian 1848, a position he held until his death. His poems deal with the sights and sounds of the woodland and the early days of the settlement of America.

He enjoyed the Adirondacks, and was quite familiar with the Saranac Lake region.

Party consisting of John A. Griswold, of Troy, Henry A Brigham of West Troy, Alfred B. Street, and John H. Reynolds, of Albany, left for the Saranac Lakes on the 12th inst. There are hundreds of denizens from the great cities ruralizing in the wilderness west of us already. Game and fish in abundance this year.
