Douglas Elijah Martin was the brother of Paul Smith's wife, Lydia Martin, and long served as a guide at Paul Smith's Hotel. He was one of the guides photographed by A. W. Durkee at Paul Smith's boathouse on August 8, 1884. In his later years, he served as guide and caretaker for the camp of a Mrs. Godfrey. Douglas Martin worked as a guide for Dr. E. L.
