Andrew W. Callanan was a member of the well-known firm of Branch and Callanan, which built many of the finest buildings in Saranac Lake and vicinity. "A. W. Callanan" is also noted as a member of the Knights of Columbus who served in WWI. He was a founding member of the Saranac Lake Golf Club.

After the fire of August, 1930, which destroyed the firm's millwork plant, Callanan, in his capacity as treasurer of Branch and Callanan, filed suit against the village trustees for $189,000, charging the village with failure to maintain an adequate fire department or to provide adequate water pressure. 1
