Edward Ralph Coleman grew up in Saranac Lake; he lived at 64 Main Street when the war started. He was one of the nine boys of the Saranac Lake High School class of 1916 who would serve in some capacity in the war. He was drafted into the Army on April 3, 1918, and served in Europe in A Company of the 311th Infantry unit until he received a shrapnel wound in his left leg on October 19, 1918 after participating in the fighting in the [[1]] in September. He returned to the United States on March 11, 1919. After his return he relocated to Philadelphia and became an orthodontist.
Mr. Coleman's family shared his personal artifacts of his time as a soldier in WWI with Historic Saranac Lake. The photographs and artifacts are part of the exhibit in the John Black Room: "The Great War: World War I in Saranac Lake."
