George Van Wagenen Duryee was a real estate broker from New York City who came to Saranac Lake for his health in 1892; he bought the first lot sold in Highland Park and built the handsome shingle cottage at 143 Park Avenue. He established a successful real estate business in Saranac Lake, and served on the School Board, as a Village Trustee, and as the first president of the Saranac Lake Free Library.
