Harry was a horse . . . a good worker . . . and today he is dead. Nothing looks more out of place than a good-sized horse like Harry was, lying on the snow-covered sidewalk with the life gone out of him and still hooked to his wooden plow.
The kids were beginning to gather around him and cars slowed down to get a better look at the brown horse whose last breath had gone out of him while pulling his plow on Boadway. Harry's job was to help get the village streets cleaned and passable after the record snowfall of Saturday and Sunday while Jim Cassavaugh guided the reins. The size of the drifts and banks must have been too much for Harry who was getting old and kind of footweary anyway. He was 12.
But there is certainly no finer tribute to men OR horse than to say he died on the job . . . so we're saying that much about Harry.
