Mose is a top grade player and puts so much "English" on each shot that he must chalk up before every attempt. The tables have been in long enough to separate the men from the boys but not long enough to separate the girls from the women, but that day is coming... its in the book.

Perhaps the worst travail for a woman is to have her husband, who can play well, try to teach her the "basics of the game." It is just as bad as trying to teach your wife to drive. Tempers flare and little remembered troubles from the breakfast table carry over into the evenings social hour and many couples who come in all smiles go out looking daggers at each other and cutting into each other with very sarcastic remarks that had nothing whatsoever to do with playing pool.

There is almost an unofficial tournament going at any hour of the day or night depending on what particular time one terminates his days labors. The group that plays from two to four are pretty well cleared out when the gang from [[Swift and Company|Swifts]] comes in after the day's butchering is complete. Of course not all the Swift people play but those that do have their own built in cheering section.

Some of the players who participate in the afternoon are only biding their time til the golf course is cleaned of snow and they can take up their five irons instead of the cue stick.

But the girls play because they are trying to prove to the world that they can beat a man at his own game any time or any place while they may be failing dismally at pool they are coming along just fine as cigar smokers. The girls who can smoke with a real flair are from [[Will Rogers Memorial Hospital|Will Rogers hospital]]. People in show biz always lead the way with fashionable assaults into the formerly untrespassed areas, and you take a shapely girls and give her one of those slim ivory tipped panatellas and she will immediately set herself apart as something more than just a house wren or field sparrow.

Most of the Will Rogers panatella smokers are extremely disinterested in playing pool. If Slats Slattery were still chronicling the antics of the patients up there we should have by now a fine expose of some of the lesser arts as related to the edicts of the medical profession.

The local tobacco stores will tell you that there are many cigar smoking women... maybe even more than pipe smokers but for some unexplainable reason you have to catch them in certain key spots like the Cedar Post or in dimly lighted late afternoon clubs when they blend in with the background like social chamelions.

We have decided against a public roll call of pool players and cigar smoking women at this time though that is what sells papers they say...mention a lot of names and let the things erupt if it must. The idea that Mrs. Brown may be sneaking off to an afternoon's pool instead of doing her mending is frightening in a way and if the thing got out of hand it could easily lead to another small town crisis or domestic revolution. I wouldn't want to be the one to tell on the ladies who find housework boring and a cue stick enchanting. Their secrets are safe with me.

MERELY LOCAL

We've been watching closely for two things... girls smoking cigars and girls playing pool. We've seen both but not at the same time. The girls who smoke cigars never play pool and the girls who play pool never smoke cigars... not simultaneously anyway. .

A pool playing girl can generally retain the artifacts of feminity. The table at the Belevedere gets a good play from the girls on certain nights of the week and they have a decided charm in me way they delicately hold the cue, poise themselves on tip toe and send the balls merrily winging across the beige.

In the old days it would have been the "green" but on the new tables around town the surface is covered with beige. And worse than that, the chalk is orange so there is really no resemblance to the game your father and mine played at Billy Hayes' parlor in the old Riverside Inn.

Of the few older, players who have become addicted to the new foreshortened tables Mose DeForge carries his own chalk, probably purloined from Sam Sherman's pool palace beneath the pavement of Berkeley hill. Beware of a chalk carrier!

Mose is a top grade player and puts so much "English" on each shot that he must chalk up before every attempt. The tables have been in long enough to separate the men from the boys but not long enough to separate the girls from the women, but that day is coming... its in the book...
