SLCHS Proud of Math Team

Mr. William La Gasse, head. of the Saranac Lake High School Math Department, was understandably proud today of the performance of Paul Duncan, John Edelberg and Tom Hospelhorn who returned Saturday with the coveted Pi Mu Epsilon interscholastic Cup from St. Lawrence University.

The high school took top honors over 17 other teams with John Edelberg taking the top individual Gold Medal as the highest ranking senior.

Actually Saranac Lake has won the trophy four times instead of three, as stated in yesterday's Enterprise, but in 1968 the Red and White tied with Massena and on that team both John Edelberg and Ted Hospelhorn also participated, with Stanley Holfman taking the highest honor. Saranac Lake has now retained permanent possession of the trophy having won in 1964 and 1961 and 1968.

Three of the competing schools which number as high as 22 on occasion have captured the cup twice. They are Canton, Massena and Ogdensburg. But as Mr. LaGasse pointed out today "it is an unprecedented honor to have attained this record in the extremely difficult competitive atmosphere."

Another Saranac Lake youth. Arthur Niederbuhl of Pius X received a certificate as the highest ranking member of the school team he represented at St. Lawrence. The three top 1969 students said the test is a written examination, lasting 2 1/2 hours with no break in time and all given individually with the team score totalled from all three papers.

On the 1964 winning team Brian Arnold was No. 1, followed by Ben Ipolyi and Peter Ipolyi. In 1967 a girl outpaced the male members of the Red and White with Martha Kirche high scorer and with John Edelberg second and Stanley Hoffman third.
