Guides Associations

The Adirondack Guides Association begun in 1891; the Brown Tract Guides Association begun in 1898, and the New York State Outdoor Guides Association, begun in 1983, have been the three major guides organizations in the Adirondacks. Goals have been similar: to provide reliable guides, ensure respect for laws and to serve as fraternal organizations. Other smaller guides organizations have existed through the years. Fitz Greene Halleck, who guided Dr. E. L. Trudeau, was first president of the Adirondack Guides Association; the Honorary President was Verplanck Colvin.
