George E. Besaw

George E. Besaw, age 77, of Vermontville, passed away on June 21, 2023 at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh with his family at his side.

George was born on Feb. 4, 1946 in Saranac Lake, the son of George E. Besaw, Sr. and Clara (Swinyer) Besaw. He married Sara Keith on April 3, 1982 in Bloomingdale. Together they raised two sons, who survive, Bryan of St. Regis Falls and Timothy of Saratoga.

George graduated from SUNY Brockport and taught school in Watertown, before being drafted into the Army, where he served in Berlin. Upon his return, he worked at the American Management Association for many years, and was a school bus driver for the Saranac Lake Central School District for over 30 years. He retired as head bus driver. He was a councilman for the town of Franklin as well as Franklin town clerk.

Together, George and Sara rescued Springer Spaniels for 25 years meeting many wonderful people. He also helped with cat rescue for Animal Rescue and Welfare Services.

George was predeceased by his in-laws, Patrick and Mary Ellen Keith, Susan Muzzy, Mary Jo Rohe and his siblings, Edward Talbot and Rosalie Kilfoyle, and nephew Eric Talbot. Also his granddaughter, Callie Besaw.

Survivors including his wife and sons are three grandchildren, Logan Besaw, Addison Besaw and Freya Besaw. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, 20 Church St., Saranac Lake, NY 12983. Calling hours are scheduled for Tuesday, June 27 from 10 a.m. to noon at the funeral home with a memorial service at noon and burial to follow in Union Cemetery in Vermontville. Pastor Dan Shumway will be officiating.
