Bernard and his brothers William Joseph, Francis "Frank", sisters Mary and Nellie were placed in separate orphanages after the death of their mother, Nellie "Ellen" Coyne Heaney around 1893. Like his mother, Bernard suffered from TB which ultimately took his life. As a child Bernard was a TB "Inmate" at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester. The 1920 Federal Census, Bernard is listed as a patient at The Trudeau Sanatorium in Saranac Lake, New York. Bernard later died at his home in Rochester and was buried on Dec. 31, 1920 in a single grave with no headstone at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Rochester, NY.
