William Allen Martin was the son of William F. Martin, owner of Martin's. He gained fame as a guideboat builder. With Fred W. Rice, Sr., he built the Water Lily, the first steam powered boat on Lower Saranac Lake, in 1877. He may have lived at 188 Lake Street.

The 1880 U. S. Census states W. A. Martin is a Telegraph operator
