Ellen Sulzberger Straus was the daughter of David Hays Sulzberger. Their family occupied Cottage Two at Knollwood on Lower Saranac Lake. An article in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise on July 18, 2014, titled "Magical summers in Saranac Lake" describes Mrs. Straus's role as a grandmother to a "pack of cousins" there. Mrs. Straus hired the author, Denise Sheaks Burke, as a "camp counselor" for her grandchildren from 1991 to about 1996.
