Estelle Clare Smith Joyce, daughter of George H. Smith and Ellen Sheehan of Ohio, worked as a nurse before marriage.

She came to Saranac Lake seeking treatment for tuberculosis. Three months after arrival, she died at age 33 of pulmonary tuberculosis with hemorrhage.
