George E. Durett was a [War II veteran].    He was a son of Forrest and Rose (Sitton) Durett.

George E. Durett

SARANAC LAKE - George E. Durett, 73, of 112 Lake Flower Ave., died yesterday afternoon at the General Hospital of Saranac Lake.

He was born July 9, 1909, in Morrisonville, the son of Forrest and Rose (Sitton) Durett.

He had been a resident of Saranac Lake for the past 60 years and was employed as a saleman for Helmer Brothers here for 32 years, retiring in 1975.

Mr. Durett was a member and past grand knight of the third-degree Knights of Columbus and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 447. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army, and was held as a prisoner of war in Germany.

He is survived by his wife, the former Bernadette Seymour of Saranac Lake; two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Douglass and Mary Durett, both of Saranac Lake; three grandchildren, Marc, Brian and Sara Douglass, all of Saranac Lake; a sister, Mrs. Lena Gonyo of Plattsburgh; a brother, Albert Durett of Saranac Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be held at the Fortune Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m., today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., tomorrow.

A Bible vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m., tomorrow at the funeral home, with the third-degree Knights of Columbus in attendance. A Veterans of Foreign Wars service will follow at 8.

A mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday at 2 p.m., at St. Bernard's Church.

Burial will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery.

Memorial donations may made to the American Cancer Society.
