MERELY LOCAL

By Bill McLaughlin

We've been watching closely for two things... girls smoking cigars and girls playing pool. We've seen both but not at the same time. The girls who smoke cigars never play pool and the girls who play pool never smoke cigars... not simultaneously anyway. .

A pool playing girl can generally retain the artifacts of feminity. The table at the Belevedere gets a good play from the girls on certain nights of the week and they have a decided charm in me way they delicately hold the cue, poise themselves on tip toe and send the balls merrily winging across the beige.

In the old days it would have been the "green" but on the new tables around town the surface is covered with beige. And worse than that, the chalk is orange so there is really no resemblance to the game your father and mine played at Billy Hayes' parlor in the old Riverside Inn.

Of the few older, players who have become addicted to the new foreshortened tables Mose DeForge carries his own chalk, probably purloined from Sam Sherman's pool palace beneath the pavement of Berkeley hill. Beware of a chalk carrier!

Mose is a top grade player and puts so much "English" on each shot that he must chalk up before every attempt. The tables have been in long enough to separate the men from the boys but not long enough to separate the girls from the women, but that day is coming... its in the book...

Mose The Magnificent

The best pool player in town has only one arm. There is a contest on in the north country to eliminate all the bad players and we would like to see Mose DeForge under the big lights at the Olympic Arena polishing off the opposition as champion.

Perhaps we are premature giving the nod to Mose as the best pool player in town as that accolade is generally reserved for Bernie Robinson.

Bernie goes to tournaments and has a special cue made with ivory inlays that gives his great moments in sports and romance right on the business end…

Right today if you tried to match Bernie and Mose there would be no contest. They would refuse to play each other on the grounds of something or other.

Mose lost his arm trying to crank a model T or an old washing machine and never missed it as far as shining in the ranks of the billiard elite.

The minute the contest was announced everybody who knows of his ability began to lay side bets that eventually he would be named the Franklin County champion. Some of the restaurants are taking the contest very seriously. Others are going along with it because the trophies are on display though the name is spelled wrong on the base of the figurines. It says “ADIRONDOCK" instead of Adirondack which eventually will make them collector's items…
