Christian Scientists Elect Olsen

At a recent meeting of the members of Christian Science Society, Saranac Lake, Godwin Olsen was elected to serve as first reader for a three-year term. In this position Mr. Olsen will conduct the Sunday and Wednesday evening services at the church. He replaces John R. Cogan.

Assisting him on Sundays as second reader will be Mrs. Gladys Warfel, elected at the same meeting. The retiring second reader is Mrs. Karin Nyberg. The new readers begin their term on Sunday, Oct. 3,

The Christian Science church consists entirely of laymen, and local members are democratically elected to fill administrative posts and to conduct services.

The two elected readers carry the main responsibility for the Sunday, and Wednesday evening services of the church. Their primary duty is to read the Christian Science LessonSermon on Sunday. This is a Weekly compilation of related references from the Bible and the denominational textbook, “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," by Mary Baker Eddy.

During fee week, the same references serve as a Bible lesson on specific subjects. It is studied daily by Christian Scientists throughout the world. Read at the Sunday service, it becomes the sermon. Hymns, prayers, and a responsive reading by the congregation constitute the rest of the service.

Wednesday evening meeting, conducted by the first reader includes a period when individual members of the congregation speak informally of experience of Christian healing as understood in Christian Science.
