Vermontville has lost a daughter of one of its first settlers. Mrs. Isabel Williams who was born in the Lamson Homestead here on July 3, 1890, the daughter of Silas and Annie Herron Lamson, died recently at Uihlein Mercy Center. She was 95 and had been a resident of the center for several months.

Isabel was brought up here and went to what was known as the Red Schoolhouse. Her teacher was Hattie Williams. The schoolhouse was located across the road from the old town hall sheds and nearly everyone in Vermontville can say that some parent or grandparent was educated in the one-room school. Grades were one through eight.

After completing those eight grades, Isabel attended and graduated from Saranac Lake High School — then located where the Hotel Saranac sits today.

She next taught in area schools, including the Branch School — still standing on Swinyer Road.

In 1919 she married Harrison Williams. They moved to New Jersey where she taught and also raised a family. When her husband retired, they moved to Bloomingdale.
