Garry Trudeau, creator of Doonesbury, was born in Saranac Lake and is the great grandson of Dr. E. L. Trudeau. Garry's father and grandfather were also prominent doctors who practiced in Saranac Lake. He has designed the pin for Saranac Lake's Winter Carnival each year since 1981.
