Camp Hideaway

July 27, 1898, Margaret Bucknell Pecorini was given four acres at the north end of her mother's mile of Upper Saranac Lake shoreline north of Gull Bay. She built a camp there that burned in the 1950s. Ed Hale built a new camp after the old one burned. The camp was later owned by the David Beneke family, and was called Twin Bay Camp.Troy Times, July 16, 1921
Among the recent small dinner parties at Saranac Inn was that given by the Countess Pocerini, [sic] who is at Camp Hideaway with her son, Howard Stern and Miss Wallace, of New York.

SARANAC LAKE - Twenty men responded to a call at 5:35 Sunday morning when fire destroyed three of six buildings of the Twin Bay Camps at Bartlett's Carry. [sic, the camp is on Bartlett Carry Road, two miles north of the carry.]
According to Carl Hathaway, who was on the scene, the main house, the guest house and the laundry house were destroyed. Still standing are the pumphouse, an old woodshed and the boathouse, which contains an apartment.
A Canadian family who has rented the boathouse apartment for several summers was in residence as was the son of the owner, H.B. Evans.
According to Hathaway, the old camp, built in the early 1900's if not sooner, was extremely dry. “Only Saturday's downpour kept the whole point from burning,” Hathaway said.
Three trucks, in addition to the twenty men responded to the call and secured back at the firehouse at 9:25 a.m.
Evans returned to his home in the Jamestown-Buffalo area after being burned out as he lost all his clothes as well as the buildings in the fire.
