Mary Ellen Carrier was a nurse. She was born in Swanton, Vermont. She and her husband Charles H. Smith had a daughter, Dorothy Blanche Smith, in "West Harrietstown" in 1887. Blanche also went on to make a career as a nurse. Mary Ellen's first husband Charles died sometime afterward, and she remarried John "Jack" Carrier in 1899. They had a son, John Dean Carrier.
