Wallace Glenn Maxwell was born in Storm Lake, Iowa, and moved east with his family. He was working on the family farm when he contracted TB. He came to Saranac Lake to take the cure, and improved enough to travel back downstate. His continued work on the farm contributed to his relapse. When he moved back to the State Hospital at Ray Brook, his wife Sibyl accompanied him. Sybil worked at the Saranac Laboratory while Wallace was taking the cure. Wallace and Sybil's children were taken care of by their grandparents, and it was their grandparents who brought them up to Saranac Lake to visit their father shortly before his death.

A brick at the Saranac Laboratory Museum has been dedicated in memory of Wallace Glenn Maxwell by his daughter, Martha Kelsey.

His daughter, Martha Kesley, gave an [history] to Historic Saranac Lake in 2018 about her father's TB treatment and her mother's job at the Saranac Laboratory.
