William E. Riley owned and operated Riley's General Store in Gabriels with his father, Charles J. Riley.

SARANAC LAKE - William E Riley, 80, of Gabriels died Saturday morning, Dec 8, at his home. He was born Sept. 9, 1904, in Gabriels, the son of Charles J and Mary E. (Brown) Riley. Mr. Riley was a lifelong resident of Gabriels and, with his father, owned and operated Riley's General Store. He later took over sole operation of the business until 1955 He next was employed as a custodian at Paul Smith's College, retiring in 1969. Mr, Riley was an avid reader and gardener. He was a former member of the Brighton School Board.


Survivors include his wife, the former Mabel Columbe of Gabriels; five sons, James of Gabriels, Robert of Diamond Point, John of Bloomingdale, Timothy of Paul Smiths and Lawrence of Lake Placid; a brother, Charles J. Riley of Silver Springs, Md.; a sister, Mrs. Mary Moroney of Ogdensburg; and.three grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held at the Fortune Funeral Home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m at the funeral home. Burial will be in Brighton Cemetery in May.
