Abram N. Stein was the son of Nathan Stein, a founder of Stein-Bloch Clothing in 1883, which in 1890 was one of the first Rochester clothing firms to incorporate.

He was one of the founding members of Knollwood Club, owning Cottage Three. At his death, he left an estate valued at $1,162,770. His one-sixth share of Knollwood Club was valued at $25,000.
