 Lee Gillespie, Supervisor Of St. Armand, Dies At 68

BLOOMINGDALE — Lee W. Gillespie, supervisor of the Town of St. Armand since 1958 and chairman of the Essex County Board of Supervisors in 1944 and 1955, died unexpectedly early last Thursday at Saranac Lake General Hospital. He was 68 years of age.

He had been well on Tuesday but suddenly developed lobar pneumonia, and had been taken to the hospital in Wednesday.

Last week he had attended a meeting of the board of supervisors and took an active part in discussion preceding the rescinding of the Essex County sales tax.

Mr. Gillespie who had served on many important county committees including ways and means, building, self insurance and legislative, and was, according to county officials, “a very active supervisor whose word carried weight with the board of supervisors."

Mr. Gillespie was born in Bloomingdale, on August 11, 1893, a son of William and Harriet Noble Gillespie. He attended Bloomingdale Union Free Academy and The Dean Academy in Massachusetts. He was a painting Contractor. His first wife, Theresa Randolph, died and in 1953, he married the former Mrs. Cecelia Connelly Harvey, who survives him. Other survivors are his mother and a brother, Easton, both of Bloomingdale.

Before being elected supervisor of St. Armand, Mr. Gillespie served as town clerk and president of the village of Bloomingdale. He was chairman of the Bloomingdale Youth Commission, a trustee of the Bloomingdale Methodist Church and a member of Masonic, Elks and Shrine Lodges.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the Bloomingdale Methodist Church, the Rev. Richard Baker, pastor, officiating. Interment was in the family plot in Brookside Cemetery. Members of the Essex County Board of Supervisors and county officials attended the services.
