Robert Patnode worked at the Fish Creek Campsite as a summer caretaker, and at the Mt. Van Hoevenburg Bobsled Run, and later at the Adirondack Fish Hatchery in Lake Clear.

SARANAC LAKE - Robert F. Patnode, 76, of 5612 county Route 30, Lake Clear, died Friday, April 27, 2007 at Uihlein Mercy Center in Lake Placid.

Born June 12, 1930, in Onchiota, he was the son of Oliver and Dora (Roscoe) Patnode.

Mr. Patnode married Adelaide Prue on Aug. 21, 1953 at St. Bernard's Church in Saranac Lake. He was a life-long resident of the area and attended the Country School in Onchiota as a young boy. He finished his schooling in Saranac Lake.

Mr. Patnode was employed at the Fish Creek Campsite as a summer caretaker for many years, working at the Mt. Van Hoevenburg Bobsled run during the winter months. He later worked for the New York State Department of Conservation, Division of Fish And Wildlife as a fish technician at the fisheries in Lake Clear until his retirement in 1986.

Following retirement he was employed as a caretaker at the Pine Rock Camp until 1996. Mr. Patnode was a veteran of the United States Army and served from 1949 to 1952, and was stationed in Germany. He was a member of the Brighton Blues Ball Team, past member of the Paul Smiths-Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department and a past member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and bowler. He also coached Little League and Larry Doyle ball teams during his son's youth.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Michael Paul “Red" Patnode and his wife Sally of Gabriels; a grandson Clyde Parker of Gabriels; two sisters: Geneva Hamner of Indiana and Mildred Patnode of Onchiota; four brothers: Walton Patnode of Rainbow Lake, Francis Patnode of Glens Falls, Roland Patnode of Saranac Lake and Raymond Patnode of Saranac Lake.

He was predeceased by his parents and a brother Harold Patnode.

Calling hours will take place from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 1 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A fireman's prayer service will take place at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday and a veteran's service will immediately follow.

A funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Thomas Robert Kornmeyer officiating. Following cremation, burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Gabriels.

Friends wishing to remember Robert may make memorial contributions to High Peaks Hospice, St. Regis Falls Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Squad or the Saranac Lake Volunteer Fire Department's rescue squad in care of the funeral home.
