The Antlers

The Antlers is reputed to have been a bar located in what is now known as the Dorsey Street parking lot behind the buildings at the south end of Main Street.  This would presumably have been in the early history of the village. It has been suggested that the near-mythical bar/house of ill repute [Antlers] may have been a mis-rendering of the name, "Adler's." See page for Phil Adler.

In his childhood, Bob Seidenstein had heard stories of a bordello near Dorsey Street, and made a point of asking old timers about the legend.  In the '[of September 25, 2020] he wrote:

So whenever I talked with a local old-timer, I’d inevitably ask about it. And I’d inevitably learn nothing more than I already knew, until a full half-century after my quest started. I can’t remember who my agent of enlightenment was, but at least he’d laid the issue to rest, at long last.

Way back when, there was a place called the Antlers. But it wasn’t a bordello — it was a bar. While the old guy couldn’t remember its exact dates, he knew where it was located — in what’s now the village parking lot, by the riverbank.

However, Phil Griffin says:

There was one on Dorsey Street behind Fiddleheads. I remember seeing it as a kid just before it was torn down. My mother told me it was once a bad place but I didn’t know at that time why it had that reputation.

The Antlers was a vacant building back in 1946 and falling apart. Gendron Lumber had the property later on, I believe.
