Native peoples have lived in the Saranac Lake region for thousands of years. Until recently, many accounts suggested that native people only passed through the region seasonally.  Native artifacts have been found at Silver Lake Mountain Jones Pond, Rainbow Lake and other area sites.  Many are on display at the Six Nations Indian Museum in Onchiota.
