Douglas Elijah Martin was the brother of Paul Smith's wife, Lydia Martin, and long served as a guide at Paul Smith's Hotel. He was one of the guides photographed by A. W. Durkee at Paul Smith's boathouse on August 8, 1884. In his later years, he served as guide and caretaker for the camp of a Mrs. Godfrey. Douglas Martin worked as a guide for Dr. E. L. Trudeau in the fall of 1875, when Trudeau wrote "Douglas and I drove about the country looking for a place where I could bring my family" to live for the winter.
