George N. Fountain of Paul Smiths, was an electric lineman, a logger, and caretaker at Meacham Lake Campground.  He was inducted into the New York State Hall of Fame at the Adirondack Museum in 1997.

SARANAC LAKE - George N. Fountain, 91, of Paul Smiths, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004 at the Franklin County Nursing Home in Malone.

Born in Chasm Falls on Nov. 15, 1912, he was the son of Edmond and Caroline Carrie Boyer) Fountain.

George and his wife, Dora (Helms) Fountain of Paul Smiths, whom he married in 1934, raised their family in Paul Smiths. Fountain first worked for Paul Smiths Light and Power, which eventually Became Niagara Mohawk. He then became a logger for approximately 40 years. He went on to work for New York state as a caretaker at Meacham Lake campground, where he retired in 1987. An avid horseman, George owned a team of pulling horses. He and his wife Dora were also grand marshals of the 1996 Tupper Lake Woodsmen's Days.

In 1997, he was inducted into the New York State Hall of Fame at the Blue Mountain Lake Museum.

He enjoyed snowmobiling, four-wheeling and deer hunting.

He is survived by his wife Dora; four sons: Rouse Fountain and his wife Bethyl of Paul Smiths, John Fountain and his wife Jo-Ann of Malone, Richard Fountain of Westville and Patrick Fountain and his wife Ann of South Lake Tahoe, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Claudia Fountain of Beulah, Colo.; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Beatrice Provost of Niagara Falls and Gladys King of Albuquerque, N.M. and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a son, George Fountain; three sisters; Mildred Poison, Ruth Cherrier and Marion Helms; and three brothers, Winfred Fountain, Herbert Fountain and Warren Fountain.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday Sept. 2 at the Fortane-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A Bible Vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:15 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3 at St. Bernard’s Church in Saranac Lake with the Rev. Thomas Kornmeyer officiating. Burial will follow at the Brighton Cemetery in Gabriels

Friends wishing to remember George may make memorial contributions to the Paul Smiths-Gabriels Volunteer Fire Department in care of the funeral home.
