Saranac Lake Woman Dies On Route 3 “Death Curve”

Gertrude A. Baker, 78, of Saranac Lake was killed Saturday in an automobile accident on Route 3, only a few feet from where another fatal automobile accident occurred the previous week.

Funeral services were held this morning for Mrs. Baker, a 50-year resident of Saranac Lake. Two other persons in another car which hit Mrs. Baker’s head-on were in poor condition at Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington. Right after the accident, their condition had been considered critical.

Mrs. Baker was heading east at 5:15 p.m. on Route 3 at Clayburg on this side of Plattsburgh, when her car drifted to the wrong side of the road on a long curve. She met the other car head-on.

Mrs. Baker was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner’s physician.

In the other car were Gayle Forbes, 32, and his wife Linda, 19, of Middlebury, Vermont. They suffered severe injuries. Mr. Forbes was listed as having internal injuries, a broken right forearm and leg and several cuts on the face and body. Mrs. Forbes suffered internal injuries, a broken ankle, and cuts on the face.

The accident occured within a few feet of another two-car crash that took two lives on August 29. Then, it was the westbound car, driven by Wilfred Venne of Redford which drifted into the wrong lane as it rounded the curve and ran head-on into a pick-up truck driven by Grant Broderick of Plattsburgh.

Mr. Venne was killed in the wreck and one of the truck passengers, James (Ross) Reil of Cadyville died last Friday at Mary Fletcher Hospital.

Mrs. Baker was buried in St. Bernard’s Cemetery following a mass at 9 this morning at St. Bernard’s Church. A rosary service was held last night at 8:30. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Gordon E. Vosburgh of Saranac Lake and Mrs. Harry LaDue of Syracuse; three brothers, Sam Ebare of Brewerton, Rudolph Ebare of Altona, and Owen Ebare of Palm Springs, California. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Baker was born in Altona, August 3, 1886, a daughter of Sam and Adeline Ducatt Ebare. Her husband, Edward, died in 1936. She had been a resident of Saranac Lake 50 years.

Mrs. Baker’s was the only death listed in the North Country due to an accident over the Labor Day weekend. There were several other serious accidents, however.
