SARANAC LAKE - Helen R. Arnold, 90, of 78 Will Rogers Road, Saranac Lake, passed away peacefully with her family surrounding her at the Adirondack Medical Center on Wednesday morning, Aug. 15, 2007.

Born Oct. 15, 1916, she was the only child of Ernest Rasmussen and Flora Austin. She moved to Franklin Falls as a high school student and graduated from Bloomingdale High School before earning her R.N. degree from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia in 1940.

She married Ralph Arnold in 1941. They enjoyed 59 years of sharing a country life together.

Helen had a long life of caregiving that included her time as a highly respected professional nurse at both the General Hospital of Saranac Lake beginning in 1958, and Will Rogers Hospital, from where she retired in 1976. Countless friends, neighbors and relatives often benefited from her medical knowledge and skills.

After she retired, Helen and Ralph enjoyed extensive travel throughout the United States, including Hawaii and Alaska, as well as in Asia. They especially enjoyed their fishing and camping trips throughout Canada.

Her concern for others extended to her volunteer activities, which included the Women’s Shelter, Meals on Wheels and the Literacy Project.

Although born and raised a city girl, she came to experience, savor and cherish all aspects of a country life. Friends from around the globe enjoyed her style of Adirondack hospitality at their home at the foot of Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid.

She is survived by her son, Richard of Taipei, Taiwan; her daughter, Elaine Lamia and her husband Jeffrey of New York City; her granddaughter, Emily Lamia, of Washington D.C.; and James Pan of Hagerstown, Md., who is considered a part of the family. She was predeceased by her husband in 2000.
