SARANAC LAKE - Mabel B. Riley, 82, formerly of Gabriels, died Monday, July 12, 1993, at the Adirondack Medical Center of Saranac Lake.
She was born June 17, 1911, in Champlain, the daughter of Alexander and Cora Mae (Murray) Columbe.
She came to the Adirondacks in the 1930s, and was employed at the Hotel Riley in Gabriels where she met and married her husband, William E. Riley. He died in 1984. After raising five children, she went to work as a nurses aide at Gabriels Sanitarium and as a cook for Paul Smiths College, Gabriels Campus and finally at the Gabriels Post Office, retiring as assistant postmaster. She loved children and flowers and devoted most of her life to caring for them.
She is survived by five sons, James of Gabriels, Robert of Diamond Point, John of Bloomingdale, Timothy of Paul Smiths and Lawrence of Saranac Lake; three brothers, James Paul and Allen St. John of West Chazy; and two sisters, Bertha Dapo of Peru and Clara Ducharme of West Chazy; five grandchildren, Martha and Gregory Riley of Diamond Point, Christine Riley of Saranac Lake and Jennifer and Shane Riley of Saranac Lake; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, John, and a sister, Lillian, died earlier.
Calling hours will be today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the St. Regis Presbyterian Church in Paul Smiths, with the Rev. Jessie Corum officiating. Burial will follow in Brighton Cemetery in Gabriels.
